progressive - noun
1. favoring or advocating progress, change, improvement, or reform, as opposed to wishing to maintain things as they are, esp. in political matters: a progressive mayor.

It is interesting to note that FDR's New Deal came during the 2nd progressive movement in America. As part of the New Deal, the Blue Eagle campaign became as oppressive as being "Green" is today. Shop owners were coerced into joining (often times by force) and displaying the "Blue Eagle" logo in shop windows. Display of this symbol let people know that you were "on board". By joining the NiRA's "Blue Eagle" program, you essentially gave up your rights to run your business as you saw fit to the government thus "Nationalizing" your business. Under the guise of this program, the government could tell how much you could sell goods for, what your labor hours should be and how much you had to pay your employees. Competition was discouraged and disobedience was always met with legal action and often met with violence. The NiRA was eventually ruled unconstitutional by a unanimous vote of the Supreme Court in 1935 (Schechter v. United States). But that hasn't stopped the progressive movement from controlling industry.
Today, businesses are urged to "Go Green". Legal policies keep businesses from operating in protected areas. Legislation regulates energy usage and environmantal impact of industry. And activist groups protest (often times violently) to stop you from doing business.
Nationalising industry is a principle plank of fascism. While conservative capitalists seek to empty corporation of the influence of government, Liberal "progressives" seek to nationalise every aspect of business from energy and healthcare all the way down to "mom and pop" stores.
Competition is discouraged because it hurts the small business owner (like taxes do not) and minimum wage and health care provisions are enforced by law. It is amazing to me that the Left points the finger of fascism to the group of people who seek to minimize government when they themselves seek for the Naional control of every aspect of our lives.
