Yeah, I know I just posted some meaningless political drivel, but something else came up in the news this morning. William Ayers is back in the news doing an interview with ABC (link). This article is basically the news media throwing a couple of softballs at the former terrorist about his role in damaging the Obama campaign.
If you don't know who William Ayers is, let me give you a brief history. Back in the 1960's, Ayers was a college student and he was smarter than anyone. So he took his smart college education and became an anti-establishment, anti-war, pro-socialism activist. Knowing that the only way to get through to America was to attack it, Ayers helped to form the Weather Underground, or Weathermen, a protest organization that had a knack for intelligence. This intelligence included protesting the violence of the Vietnam War with... well... violence. This organization bombed the Capitol, The Pentagon, and many police departments throughout the country. Their tactics almost always used explosives of some sort and when those weren't available, there were always violent clashes with local police.
So what's got me hot in this interview is a couple of statements from Ayers, defending himself and his terrorist organization.
Quote 1:
"It's not terrorism because it doesn't target people, to kill or injure,"
Quote 2:
"The content of the Vietnam protest is that there were despicable acts going on, but the despicable acts were being done by our goverment... I never hurt or killed anyone,"
On February 16, 1970, San Francisco police office Sgt Brian McDonnell was working at his precinct when a bomb placed on the window ledge of his office exploded. Sgt. McDonnell was injured along with two other officers. 2 days later on February 18, 1970 Sgt. McDonnell succumbed to his wounds and passed away. The bomb was set and detonated by members of the Weather Underground. Larry Grathwol, an FBI mole inside the Weather Underground stated:
"[Ayers] cited as one of the real problems that someone like Bernardine Dohrn had to plan, develop, and carry out the bombing of the police station in San Francisco, and he specifically named her as the person that committed that act. . . . He said that the bomb was placed on the window ledge and he described the kind of bomb that was used to the extent of saying what kind of shrapnel was used in it. . . . [I]f he wasn’t there to see it, somebody who was there told him about it, because he stated it very emphatically."
Bernardine Dohrn was married to Ayers at the time.
Rock County, New York police officers Edward O'Grady and Waverly Brown were responding to a bank robbery in 1981. They were shot to death. Along with an armoured car guard. Who were the bank robbers? Why, they were member of the Weather Underground, of course. They needed money to continue to finance their organization and didn't care who got in the way.
As far as the two quotes go, you can make your own assumption here. But making the assertion that violent protests, bombings, and the murder of at least 3 police officers and the wounding of countless others are not terrorist activities because no one got hurt or killed? Even writing that sentence doesn't make sense.
